The era of antibiotics, where deadly bacterial infections are knocked out completely in a matter of days, may be coming to an end soon, according to more than a handful of media headlines referring to a new paper in the Lancet Infectious Diseases medical Journal.
Doctor Bastomski’s Comments:
Clearly the best way to treat a bacterial or other infection is to never get one to begin with. That does start with a healthy immune system. Some examples of prevention include staying off of sugar especially if you are immune compromised as it reported that taking in the amount of sugar in a can of a soft drink such as Pepsi, approx 9 teaspoons, is sufficient to significantly reduce your immune systems abilities for approx 4 hours. That is a window of opportunity for problematic microbes outside or those even on our inside to become virulent, multiply and attack.
Another example would be for one prone to sinus infections to get into a daily habit of using a nette pot to rinse their sinus’s.
Or getting regular sufficient sleep. Staying off inflammatory foods. Taking time to de-stress – breathing exercises, yoga, or a nice walk.
OK, but now you got the infection and want some ideas on how to treat them in a more natural manner. In my practice I typically start with an herbal approach. We use energinic testing to help ascertain which herb might have the best response. I have seen many cases of ongoing infection that have failed with various antibiotic and other prescription approaches respond nicely and reasonably quickly to this type of herbal approach.
As well, getting the body and spine adjusted, that is get the structure and nervous system working better can be most helpful. That I routinely do as well as part of the same office visit.
It is only in the past few years that medicine has firmly concluded that their is indeed a direct two way interplay between the brain and nervous system and the immune system. Things that inflame the body, such as sugar, junk food, food allergies, toxic chemicals and toxic metals cause the body and it’s immune system to send inflammatory chemicals to the brain thus impeding good neurologic function. And things that impede good neurologic function such as lack of good sleep, emotional stress, junk food, toxic chemicals etc as well as an unbalanced spine will cause down regulation of your immune system. That is how we are wired.
Of interest in this area are lessons from the great flu pandemic of 1918 which killed perhaps 50 million people worldwide. In the US, it is reported that of the people who got infected that went to their MD for treatment approximately 10% died. On the other hand of those that went to an osteopath (DO) or to a chiropractor and received hands on manual treatment, very few died. Soon word about chiropractic’s value spread and the relatively new profession that had started in 1895 found lots of public support. So much so that many states including California (in 1922) started granting Chiropractic separate licensure after citizens voted for it to be recognized as a separate health profession.
