Dr Bastomski’s Thoughts:
Actually the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the US in individuals older than 6 years, is the thyroid auto immune disease Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. In terms of auto immune disease as a category by itself, the thyroid is the most commonly affected organ.
The most common cause of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is genetic susceptibility and environmental toxins such as all of the chemicals in our air and food.
As with all auto-immune disease, women are by far more likely to be affected. Also as with all auto immune disease, there is almost always a food allergy component involved and with thyroid until proven otherwise, it is gluten.
As part of one’s yearly blood test, I always recommend that my patients obtain a thyroid panel to include a bit more than is traditionally checked. This would include the standard TSH, as well as adding ones total T4, total T3, free T4 and free T3, reverse T3 and the thyroid auto immune antibodies to thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin.
Most people have heard of vitamin E, and you probably also know that it acts as a powerful antioxidant in your body, helping toward off free radical damage. What you may not know, however, is just far-reaching this vitamins effect on your health may be… and that there’s a good chance you are not getting enough — or the right kinds– from dietary sources alone. I would recommend you read my full article below about Vitamin E and how it can save your life.
